Radio

Repair Service

We offer a repair service to CB and amateur radio equipment. Our engineer is an advanced licensed radio amateur with a good track record in repairing amateur equipment. He also teaches the advanced license at the local radio club. From old valve sets to modern transceivers all will be examined and tested with great care. We have had success repairing radios that would normally be considered beyond repair!

We do repair linear amplifiers - however please remember that for some semiconductor linear amplifiers it is often cheaper to replace the unit than for us to order a set of replacement transistors and charge the appropriate labour for installation and testing.

Repair charges

For CB equipment, just bring the radio in for examination. The initial examination is free and once the fault is determined an estimate will be prepared.

For amateur radio equipment there is an initial examination charge of £15 per hour, which will be payable if you choose not to continue with a repair. Repair rates are £30/hr except on difficult jobs which may be charged at a lesser rate to keep the repair economical.

Please remember that repair to amateur radio equipment requires significant skill in faultfinding, advanced knowledge of electronics, work with surface mount miniature components and advanced test equipment. Do not expect your 'bargain' ebay rig that arrived dead to be repaired for £25. Older equipment will inevitably have more problems due to component aging. Radios that have been 'twiddled' require lengthy realignment work.

We provide a high quality repair service for your favourite radios, offering an accurate as possible estimate which in some cases can take hours to prepare. This is to give you the maximum amount of information about your radio and its condition.

Please attempt to make a judgement prior to bringing in a radio for repair as to whether you are willing to spend between e.g £60 for a radio in good condition with one major, moderately straightforward fault, and £200, e.g. for a radio in poor condition, with major faults, with multiple age related problems, missing components, randomly twiddled alignments etc.

You can be assured that your radio will be taken care of and be restored to good working order.

Equipment that is returned by courier can be insured up to a value chosen by you. We use a good value courier with good insurance options.

List of radios NOT accepted for repair

Unfortunately I am not willing to repair any radio, there are some which I no longer take on due to their design, severity of old age problems and other sensible reasons.

Testimonials

Yaesu FT-857

Faults: Nasty internal crackle making transceiver unusable, DSP filtering issues.

Hello Dan,

My thanks go out to you. What a wonderful job you have done repairing my
857-D. Since I have had the radio its always been a tiny amount off
frequency on 2M SSB. I conducted a test with my brother earlier who
lives in Shropshire and he said it was bang smack on frequency.. Thanks
very much Dan.

Faults: No TX, blown PSU, blown PA, notch not working

Hi Dan,

Just a short note to thank you for putting my FT980 back in good order. It is working really well and I have had contacts with VP8 LP. in the Falklands, and ZD7 FT on St. Helena in the last couple of days on 15 metres. Thanks again.

Faults: Low power output, scratchy aged controls, dead backlights, general poor condition

I bought this rig off e bay, when it arrived as soon as I tried tune up the rig the power output suddenly went dead. Initially I found it difficult to find anyone who worked on these rigs but then I found Dan from Professional Repairs in Cardiff. Dan diagnosed the problem pretty quick and called me to discuss what needed to be done along with a few other minor "jobs" e.g. the volume control was noisy and other knobs were stiff because the rig hadn't been maintained by it's previous owner. Also the rig looked well used and had scratches on the outer casing.

When I got the rig back it looked like new, all the cosmetics had been tidied up and the front panel was shining! In fact I am convinced Dan did more than what he had charged me for. More importantly all radio reports have been good ever since. Where this rig was worthless in it's previous state it now looked and performed as new and all for a modest fee.
Needless to say I would recommend Dan to anybody having problems with their rig.

Many thanks Dan.
